News Authorities arrest Franklin man for child pornography

John KennedyDeputies with the Macon County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) arrested a Franklin man on multiple charges related to child pornography.

After receiving information from a concerned citizen, officers arrested John Kennedy, 47, of Shady Cove Lane, following the execution of two separate search warrants last Friday. Kennedy was employed by the Green & Clean Laundromat in Holly Springs Plaza.

Initially, MCSO detectives searched Kennedy's residence during an identity theft investigation. During a search for his identification, the suspect “admitted that there was child pornography in the residence,” according to search warrants from August 5.

During an interview with the suspect, Kennedy admitted to trading hundreds of pornographic photographs of children, according to reports. Investigators have seized evidence during the execution of the search warrants, where numerous items were taken as evidence including two laptop computers, film or digital photographs, cellphones and thumb drives containing the images.

So far, investigators have found no evidence that any of the victims in the images were children from Macon County. “The victims haven't been identified to be from this county,” said Macon County Sheriff Robert Holland, adding that the pictures were likely obtained and traded over the internet.

An MCSO press release circulated on Monday indicates that Kennedy admitted to using the internet, frequently using Facebook as well as other means of social networking, including AOL and YAHOO! chat rooms, to commit sexual offenses.

Investigators are requesting the public for assistance in locating any potential victims or anyone that may have information that could be useful in the prosecution of Kennedy.

“If anyone feels that they or their children may have received any inappropriate communications with Mr. Kennedy we are encouraging you to contact the MCSO Juvenile Investigations Unit immediately,” read the release.

“This case was initiated following a telephone call from a concerned citizen who had a 'Gut Feeling' that something was not right about Mr. Kennedy and his behavior,” said Holland, later adding that the suspect had been observed exhibiting questionable behavior. “It was officials from members of his church who acted appropriately from the get-go.”

“We will be analyzing these computers and evidence searching for any and all individuals who were involved with trading pornographic material involving children with Mr. Kennedy. All individuals will be aggressively sought, investigated, arrested and prosecuted.” –Sheriff Robbie Holland

Reports indicate that items found in Kennedy's residence resembled that of items stolen from fellow church members at Holly Springs Baptist Church, including a portable DVD player and a digital camera.

While conducting their investigation and working with California and Texas Authorities, MCSO investigators were able to gather enough information to allow them to success fully obtain and execute search warrants at the suspect’s residence.

Macon investigators are currently analyzing Kennedy's computers, according to Monday's release, and are searching for additional evidence against Kennedy and any other individuals who may have been involved in the incident.

Holland attributes the success of the arrest to MCSO Juvenile Investigations officers Amy Stewart and Judy Lau. “I give credit of the arrest to them,” he said. “They took and followed up on information and leads. If there was a roadblock, they worked through it ... Without them we wouldn't have had the outcome that we had.”

“We will be analyzing these computers and evidence searching for any and all individuals who were involved with trading pornographic material involving children with Mr. Kennedy. All individuals will be aggressively sought, investigated, arrested and prosecuted,” concluded Holland.

Kennedy is currently facing three felony counts of third degree sexual exploitation of a minor and one felony count of identity theft with additional charges pending. Magistrate Brandon McDowell set a $100,000 secured bond on his charges with his first court appearance set for Aug. 18, in Macon County District Court. Kennedy remains in custody at this time.
