News Mayor signs Constitution Week proclamation

Town of Franklin Mayor Joe Collins signed a proclamation encouraging citizens to observe Constitution Week Sept. 17-23.

Regent of the Battle of Sugartown Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Judy Hughes and Carmen Jessup, Vice Regent of the chapter presented Mayor Collins with the proclamation.

Constitution Week was signed into law (Public Law #915) by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Aug. 2, 1956, after the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside a week for the Constitution.

The local chapter of DAR have worked hard to encourage the citizens of Macon County to honor the weeklong commemoration of America’s most important document.

The Battle of Sugartown Chapter placed a Constitution Week display in the window of the Macon County Historical Museum, in the Macon County Library, and at the Macon County Fair.

In addition, they provided Constitution Week posters for distribution to all schools in Macon County, the courthouse and the Town of Franklin office.

The Macon County Arts Council celebrated Constitution Week by making the Constitution the theme of its monthly ARTSaturday Children’s Program.
