News Local Girl Scouts need adult volunteers

Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont (GSCP2P) needs caring adult volunteers to make Girl Scouting possible for all girls and provide new experiences and knowledge.

“If more adult volunteers are able to give some of their time, more girls will be able to participate in exciting Girl Scout programs,” Christine Ritch, director of recruitment for Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont, said. “Volunteering can be tailored to one’s skill set and how much time a volunteer can give. Locally, we have as many as twelve girls on a waiting list.”

To volunteer, one must be at least 18 years of age or older, be a positive role model, have a flexible attitude and sense of humor and must become a member of the Girl Scouts for $12 per year. Volunteers can lead troops, volunteer with events, serve on committees or help at camp.

Support and guidance for all adult volunteers is provided by GSCP2P. Girl Scout council staff and experienced volunteers provide accessible, practical courses that make every volunteer’s time and efforts more efficient and successful.

Volunteers are trained to guide girls in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, which enables girls to discover new things about themselves and others, connect with new friends and learn about other cultures and places and to take action by finding ways to make their community or the world a better place.

Instruction methods are tailored towards specific volunteers’ needs. Being a volunteer opens up training opportunities, including limited online and self-study courses.

“Now is a great time to join Girl Scouts and be part of our upcoming 100th Anniversary,” Ritch said. “Girls can explore science and technology, learn about finances and healthy lifestyles and build valuable leadership skills.”

For 100 years, Girl Scouts have been having fun while learning. Through 2012, GSCP2P will offer age-appropriate programs with real experiences that prepare Girl Scouts for all aspects of life. Girl Scout experiences are also, as much as possible, girl-led and encourage learning by doing.
