News Habitat for Humanity Macon County – Not just a home builder

Above is a hand crafted canoe from Green Leaf Canoe Company being raffled off to benefit Habitat for Humanity Macon County NC. The winner will be announced at the 16th Annual Smoky Mountain Shrimp Boil August 11th, 2012. Tickets available at the Habitat Office, ReSale Store, Board members and Outdoor 76 on Main St. The handcrafted canoe maker would like to remain anonymous. Many people think Habitat for Humanity Macon County NC (HFHMCNC) is funded by some type of government agency. Funding for Habitat for Humanity Macon County NC comes primarily through donation. We hold several fundraisers during the year.

On Feb. 25th, Rathskellers Pub and Coffee Haus is hosting a “Cabin Fever” fundraiser for us and we have the Annual Smoky Mountain Shrimp Boil every August. These along with private, corporate and church donations are what keep us running.

Another misconception is that we build houses and give them away. HFHMCNC does try to build one home a year, but sometimes it takes longer due to funding restraints. The homes, however, are not just given away. There is a detailed application process based on need, income, ability to pay and other criteria. Applicants are screened and interviewed, sometimes long before being selected as a Partner Family. There are home visits before and after they become a homeowner to make sure they are following Habitat policy and to help with any problems. When selected they are required to put in 500 sweat equity hours. We offer our Partner Families classes on budgeting, setting up checking accounts, and mandaI responsibility. We also help them learn how to repair or maintain their property. They receive a noninterest loan from the local Habitat affiliate which they must pay back, like any other mortgage. The mortgage money is placed in a rotating fund and used to build additional houses.

HFHMCNC also has an Outreach Program where we help with rehabs, repairs and handicap access issues. We have processed over 23 applications over the past year. In 2011 alone Habitat volunteers have put in 387 hours on these projects. Currently we have five wheelchair ramps waiting to be done. These have been on hold because of funding restraints. The Habitat ReSale Store not only offers good, well priced, used household items and building materials, it also provides furniture, appliances, and clothing to needy families in times of need.

Habitat for Humanity Macon County NC would like to thank those who have been so faithful in donating and encourage everyone to consider being a part of our efforts to help those in our community to have decent housing.
