The North Carolina Highway Patrol launched Motorcycle Safety Awareness week April 30 through May 6 to educate the public about motorcycle safety in hopes of reducing the number of motorcycle wrecks in the state. Southwestern Community College offers a Basic Rider course and Advanced Rider courses.
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation developed the Basic Motorcycle Rider curriculum to cover the basic fundamentals in order to become a safe and responsible motorcyclist. It provides the opportunity for the participant to learn the physical and mental skills important for operating a motorcycle.
In the classroom, participants learn ways to minimize risk and handle special road situations. During the riding portions, students will be coached to develop the physical skills of basic control that include straight line riding, stopping, turning, and shifting, and then move on to more advanced skills in stopping quickly, cornering and swerving.
