News Sylva teen fatally struck by vehicle

A Macon County man struck a Jackson County teen with his car in the early morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 6.

At approximately 4:42 a.m., officers of the Sylva Police Department responded to a call advising that a pedestrian had been hit by a car traveling eastward on West Main Street. The incident occurred near Mark Watson Park.

At approximately 4:42 a.m., officers of the Sylva Police Department responded to a call advising that a pedestrian had been hit by a car traveling eastward on West Main Street. The incident occurred near Mark Watson Park.

Upon arrival, officers determined that the vehicle belonged to David Nix, 45, of Otto. The victim was later identified as John David Ty Conner, 18, of Sylva.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Rescue Squad, State Highway Patrol and the Sylva Fire Department assisted in the initial investigation.

The collision and the circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation. No charges have been filed, according to Sylva Police Chief Davis Woodard.

“We won’t know anything until we get toxicology reports back on the victim,” said Woodard.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 10. Melton Funeral Home, Sylva was in charge of arrangements.
