Rabun County Sheriff Frank Andrews reports that on April 3rd, 2013, the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office began investigating an allegation of Disabled Person Abuse.
On April 3rd, 2013 Mountain City Police responded to the Raco Sports Bar in reference to a possible assault. Rabun County EMS also responded to the location.
Upon arrival officers observed a 21 year old disabled adult, who is known as Ashley Hamilton of Clayton, Ga., with extensive injuries to her head and face. Rabun County Sheriff’s Office Investigators responded to the location and began investigating the allegations that Ashley had been assaulted. Ashley Hamilton was not able to provide investigators with any details as to what contributed to her injuries.
Ashley Hamilton was transported by her mother, who is known as Kelly Hamilton to Angel Memorial Medical Center in Franklin, NC.
Rabun County Investigators consulted with the Mountain Circuit District Attorney’s Office and the Clayton Police Department concerning details of the investigation.
Independent investigation revealed that Ashley Hamilton had been left with two family friends, while her mother was out of town. Witnesses stated essentially that they believed Ashley had received her injuries in the afternoon hours of April 2nd, 2013. The following morning on ?April 3rd, 2013, a home health professional stated that she encouraged Ashley’s mother to take her to the hospital to check her injuries. It was later in the afternoon hours that officer’s and Rabun EMS responded to the Raco Sports Bar.
Rabun County Sheriff’s Office Chief Investigator Gerald Johnson stated essentially that he is emotionally effected and very concerned over the thoughts of anyone being calloused enough to hurt any innocent person, however, when conducting an investigation of this nature, we must explore all the facts and circumstances. This case involves several persons of interest. There are questions concerning the timeline between receiving the injuries and the actual reporting of the injuries. We must be diligent in our efforts to find as much tangible evidence as possible since our victim in not in a position to tell us what happened to her. It is in the interest of justice to see that no stone is left unturned.
The Sheriff’s Office is currently reaching out to other professionals that can lend expert opinions relating to the injuries Ashley has sustained while continuing to investigate the allegations of Disabled Person Abuse. A referral has been made concerning the allegations to the Georgia Department of Adult Protective Services. The Mountain Circuit District Attorney’s Office is being regularly updated on the status of the case.
The victim was moved from North Carolina to an undisclosed Medical Center in Georgia for continued treatment.
The case is still under investigation.
