News TDA votes on summer expenditures

The Tourism Development Authority (TDA) of Franklin recently held its monthly meeting on Monday at the Boiler Room.

Biker rally advertisements in sight

Authority members unanimously voted to award a grant to Sylvia Cochran, president of U.S. Rider News and national editor for U.S. Rider News, a motorcycle enthusiast publication. Cochran organizes several motorcycle rallies around the country, including the annual Reunion Run in Helen, Ga., held in the first week of June. The Helen event is now in its 11th year. Cochran’s request was for $4,000, which would pay for promotional expenses. The TDA sponsored Biker Rally event is scheduled for August 27-29 of next year.

Fourth of July festival

The TDA also unanimously voted to approve a grant request for $1,500 to Franklin’s Main Street Program, to pay for Franklin’s fifth annual Fourth of July Parade and Celebration. Not only will free watermelons be given out at the festival, explained Linda Schlott, director of the Main Street Program, but American-made American flags will also be given out.

“This is an event that will never be able to support itself,” said Schlott of the festival, which gives items out for free every year, along with providing a parade, pet contest and running advertisements in local media.

Another TDA appointment

With three vacant seats available for appointment on the TDA, members voted unanimously to recommend Ellen Jenkins, who recently took over as operator of Primrose Lane on Main Street, as the next member of Authority. Jenkins represents a business that is dependent upon tourism sales, said Grubermann, which is why she was chosen.

The two remaining seats do not require candidates greatly impacted by the tourism industry, said Mike Grubermann, but representatives of hyper local businesses. “The two other seats do not need to be 100 percent tourist related, but close,” he said.

Presentation time limit

Due to the amount of lengthy presentations the TDA has endured in recent months, TDA chairman Candy Pressley motioned that the TDA adopt a policy that would restrict presentations to a time limit of ten minutes.
