The Macon County 4-H sponsored “4-H Entertains” at Tartan Hall was led by Katelyn Kasper, emcee for the evening. Judges included Patti Hubbs, Margie Kellam and JoAnn Yust, all having musical backgrounds. The winners were Katie Bowman and Jakin Ivey, County Champions, for their piano duet, “Allegro con Brio from Symphony No. 5”, by Ludwig Van Beethoven, transcribed by Hugo Ulrich; Forest Byrd received Reserve Champion honors for his Electric Guitar solo, “Ronda Alla Turca” by Mozart; and Chandon Ivey was named Alternate for his piano solo, “March of the Dwarfs” by Edvard Grieg. The top two winners in the 9-18 age group are eligible to participate in West District Activity Day at Cullowhee Valley School, June 23.
Each of the participants received a gift bag. The winners also received a 4-H backpack and money for their placings — $20 for first, $15 for second and $10 for third. Katie Bowman received a blue ribbon for her piano solo, “Root Beer Rag,” by Billy Joel. Jakin Ivey received a blue ribbon for his piano solo, “Pirates of the Caribbean Medley” by Klaus Badelt, arranged by Jakin Ivey.
Red Ribbon Award Winners included: River Byrd, Piano Solo “Bumble Boogie,” by N. Rimsky-Karasakoff; Gabrianne Ivey, Violin Solo; Gavotte from “Mignon” by A. Thomas; Sky Byrd, Vocal Solo “Reflection” by Len Salonga; River & Sky Byrd, Piano and vocal “Rock Around the Clock” by Max C. Freedman and Jimmy DeKnight; Sarah Bowman, Vocal and Guitar Solo, “Edelweiss” by Rodgers and Hammerstein; and Meadow Byrd, Piano Solo “Easy Winner” by Scott Joplin.
