In conjunction with the annual Macon County Fair, the Macon County Rural Development Panel is once again raffling off a cord of firewood. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Agricultural Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The Fund awards scholarships of $500 to Macon County first-year college students enrolled in agriculture and natural resource-related studies.
Friends of Sam W. Mendenhall, Macon County Agent with the NC Agricultural Extension Service from the 1930s until his death in 1954, established the Memorial Fund.
The Macon County Rural Development Panel (RDP) administers the fund. The RDP is an organization of representatives from each of the federal, state, and county agricultural, rural development, forestry, and wildlife agencies in Macon County.
The Scholarship is derived from the residual value and earnings of the original Mendenhall Memorial Fund plus receipts from the RDP firewood raffle at the Macon County Fair and from special donations.
In 2011, the RDP awarded two $500 scholarships to Franklin High School graduates, one to Kaitlyn Sutton, who is studying Biology at NC State University, and one to Justin McClure, who is studying Natural Resource Management at Haywood Community College.
