Brad Knopps of Highlands was the overall winner of the Par 5k race held at Highlands Falls Country Club last Saturday, September 9. His time was 19:58 minutes.
Open to all runners and walkers in Western North Carolina who wanted to contribute to the fight against cancer, 83 people participated in the event.
This was the second annual Par 5k, which is hosted at an area country club. Proceeds of the event are donated to a Macon County non-profit. This year’s recipient was Relay for Life of Highlands. It was the first fundraiser for the 2012 Relay for Life.
Dave Linn, Annual Par 5k Event Director and Old Edwards Inn Fitness Center Supervisor, says, “ Our goal was to raise $2,000, and donations continue to be mailed in. Based on the amount received by race day, we should easily top that.”
A breakfast buffet was offered to all racers and spectators by Highlands Falls Country Club, with a raffle of a variety of prizes donated by local businesses. Included was a round of golf at Highlands Falls Country Club.
Linn says, “The golf course was the perfect postcard of why everyone calls the Smoky Mountains ‘God’s country.’ Waterfalls could be seen along the cart pathway as racers made their way around the course to complete a total of 3.1 miles. It was the most beautiful setting I’ve ever seen for such an event.”
