Macon County will honor its veterans with a special parade and ceremony on Friday, Nov. 11, beginning at 10 a.m. with a Veterans Parade through downtown Franklin, followed by a ceremony at the Gazebo on the Square featuring Vietnam veteran Gary Shields as the keynote speaker. Vice Mayor Verlin Curtis will also speak and elementary school children will sing. The ceremony will conclude with a wreath laying ceremony on the courtyard of the Macon County Courthouse. The community is encouraged to attend and show their support.
Immediately following the ceremony, veterans and their families are invited to a chili luncheon at the VFW Post on West Palmer Street.
The Jackson County Senior Center is hosting a Veteran’s Appreciation Dinner Thursday, Nov. 10, in the Heritage Room at the JC Department on Aging, 100 County Services Park, Sylva. Dinner starts at 5:30 and is free to veterans or their widows with one guest. There is a $10 charge to all others. Call (828)586-4944 to sign up.
A Veterans Appreciation Dinner hosted by the Rabun County Chamber of Commerce will be held Thursday, Nov. 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rabun County Civic Center. Free for Rabun County veterans, widows and widowers of veterans; $10 for spouses; $20 for family/friends. Call (706)782-4812.
