Western Carolina University’s Office of Continuing Education is now offering online programs that allow individuals to earn certificates in nutrition, fitness and health.
The result of a collaboration involving WCU, Educational Fitness Solutions Inc. and others, the programs make it possible for students to earn certification in a period ranging from three months to two years, depending on the program. Fitness professionals from all fields are encouraged to enroll, as well as individuals seeking a new career as a health or fitness professional.
Certificates are available in the areas of fitness business management; personal fitness training; senior fitness training; women’s exercise training and wellness; family nutrition; functional family nutrition; nutrition for optimal health, wellness and sports; school nutrition and wellness; and posture.
Coordinators for the online programs are leading experts and instructors in the health and fitness industry. The instructors hold either master’s or doctoral degrees in exercise physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, physical therapy, nutrition or other exercise- related fields.
Programs are designed to enhance interaction between instructors and students, with chat rooms, discussion questions, e-mail and the telephone used to facilitate discussion. Some programs include the use of supplemental materials such as video and audio tapes, DVDs and CDs. Continuing education units are available for fitness professionals seeking recertification or career advancement.
