News Community Shop With a Cop provides Christmas cheer to Macon children

Officers from various law enforcement agencies took children to Wal-Mart on a Christmas shopping spree during the annual Shop With a Cop event.Barbie dolls and action figures, electric guitars and winter coats: these were just some of the items seen in Walmart shopping carts during Macon County’s annual Shop With A Cop event.

For 13 years, Shop With A Cop has been bringing Christmas cheer to underprivileged children in the county. Local law enforcement officers accompanied the kids on a shopping spree and then to lunch afterwards to get acquainted. Although kids were able to choose from an assortment of toys, most of the kids said their favorite part of the day was having the chance to ride in the police cars and hang out with officers from Macon County Sheriff’s Office, NC Wildlife, Franklin Police Department, State Bureau of Investigation and other agencies.

Funding for the program is made possible through events throughout the year, and donations from community organizations like the Rotary Club.
