News Community CPT John O’Brien is new commander at Ft. Sill, Okla.

CPT John O'Brien while on maneuvers during a field training exercise in Germany.A Change of Command Ceremony was recently held for CPT John O’Brien formerly of Franklin, making him the Commander of C Battery 1st Battalion 19th Field Artillery at Ft. Sill, Okla.

CPT O’Brien was born in Sterling, Ill. He enlisted in the Army in December 1985. He attended Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Ft. Sill, Okla. He was awarded the MOS 13F (Fire Support Specialist). His first assignment was with HHB 2-3 Field Artillery (FA) in Kirchgoens, Germany from November 1986 – May 1989. Additionally CPT O’Brien served eight years in the National Guard as a member of the 227th FA Brigade (BDE), 3-116th FA Battalion (BN) and 210th Military Police.

After a break in service, he enlisted in the Army in 2005 as a 13F and was assigned to 1st BDE 3rd Infantry Division (ID) where he served as a member of the BDE COLT teams for HHB 1-41 FA BN at Ft. Stewart, GA. He deployed to Iraq in support of OIF V from January 2007 – November 2007 with 3rd ID. CPT O’Brien received his commission through the Officer Candidate School at Ft Benning, Ga. He then attended the Air Defense Artillery (ADA) Basic Course at Ft. Bliss, Texas.

CPT O’Brien was assigned to 5-7 ADA BN in Kaiserslautern, Germany where he served as a Tactical Control Officer and Launcher Platoon Leader for A Battery and B Battery from December 2008 – March 2011. While stationed in Germany, he took part in various missions taking him to Israel and Poland. CPT O’Brien is a graduate of the Field Artillery Captain’s Career Course at Ft. Sill, OK.

CPT O’Brien is a graduate of Western Carolina University with a BS in Business. He is currently working on his Master’s degree at Cameron University in Lawton, Okla. He and the former Lynne Hall of Franklin, have been married for 15 years and have two children.

CPT O’Brien’s awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal (1 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (3 OLC), Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal (1 Service Star), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Ribbon (1 OLC).
