On May 7, the “Airing of the Quilts” event will be held. The event is a grass-roots effort by the Macon County Quilt Trail and the Main Street Program, rooted in tradition.
The Quilt Trail, with the help of the Program, have established several locations throughout the county where quilt blocks are displayed.
Way-finding maps for those quilts blocks are available, and other locals are encouraged to display their own along the way.
Schlott added that the two organizations have already spoken with several community development committees throughout Macon County, who will participate in the event.
“People used to literally air out their quilts in the spring,” explained Schlott. “We would like to see quilts out all over Macon County on that day.”
The Smoky Mountain Quilters Guild will also have a display downtown.
