In conjunction with the annual Macon County Fair, the Macon County Rural Development Panel (RDP) is once again raffling off a cord of firewood. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Agricultural Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Fund awards scholarships of $500 to Macon County first-year college students enrolled in agriculture and natural resource-related studies.
Friends of Sam W. Mendenhall, Macon County Agent with the NC Agricultural Extension Service from the 1930s until his death in 1954, established the Scholarship Fund, which is administered by the Macon RDP. The RDP is an organization of representatives from each of the federal, state, and county agricultural, rural development, forestry, and wildlife agencies in Macon County. The principal source of donations to the Scholarship Fund are receipts from the RDP firewood raffle at the Macon County Fair.
In 2011, the RDP awarded two $500 scholarships to Franklin High School graduates, one to Kaitlyn Sutton, who is studying biology at North Carolina State University, and one to Justin McClure, who is studying fish and wildlife management at Haywood Community College.
Tickets are $1 each, or six for $5. Tickets are available at the Farm Services Agency office at the Agricultural Services Building on Thomas Heights Rd. off Highlands Road, or at the Land Trust for the Little Tennessee, 557 East Main Street. Tickets will also be available at the entrance gate at the Macon County Fair. The raffle drawing will be held on the last day of the fair, Sept. 15.
