News Community Open House set to mark 50th anniversary of Words of Hope International

Herman and Ros WeitsOn Sunday, Oct. 14 from 3 to 5 p.m., an Open House will be held at Franklin Covenant Church commemorating the 50 years of Christian missionary service at home and abroad of Herman F. Weits.

Herman pastored various churches in Michigan, New Jersey and Vermont while waiting for the call to serve in the mission field. An opportunity came through Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. He then served with YWAM in his home country, the Netherlands, as well as in Curacao, several S.E. Asia countries and mostly in Indonesia.

Herman’s wife Ros served three years as an elementary school teacher and eight years as a house mother to 14 orphaned children with S.O.S. Kinderdorfin Lembang, West Java, Indonesia. She later joined YWAM in Indonesia. It was there that she met Herman. They were married in August 1988. Together they served with YWAM in Australia.

In September 1989, Herman and Ros came home to the U.S. For five years they served together in a variety of ministries in Wisconsin and then for nine years likewise in Indiana. In July 2004, God moved them to Franklin. Here they have served with two local churches as well as with several house fellowships from their home.

All these years, they have maintained and developed their network of contacts at home and abroad. In fact, they have returned to Indonesia for 2-6 months terms in the years of 2000, 2006 and 2011. They discovered that the house churches Herman helped start in 1983 have multiplied many times over and the children's ministries have developed to 20 orphanages throughout Indonesia.

For the past two years, it has been the dream of Herman and Ros to return full-time to missionary service in Indonesia. They envision pioneering a Christian retreat center on the island of Bali for those involved in Christian ministry in Indonesia. They would provide simple hospitality in a natural, peaceful setting, discipleship training in the Word of God, compassionate care and counsel and encouragement and preparation.

The name of their 50 year old mission is Words Of Hope International. The Bali Christian Retreat Center would be a ministry of that mission.

Meet Herman and Ros Weits at the Open House Sunday, Oct. 14, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Franklin Covenant Church, 265 Belleview Park Road, in Franklin.
