News Community Veterans to be honored with parade and ceremony

Macon County will honor its veterans with a special parade and ceremony on Monday, Nov. 12. event will begin at 11 a.m. with a Veterans’ Parade through downtown Franklin and will be followed by a ceremony at the Gazebo on the Square featuring keynote speaker Rick Norton, president of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #994.

The ceremony will also feature remarks by local officials and music by local elementary school children who will sing for the veterans. The ceremony will conclude with a wreath-laying ceremony on the courtyard of the Macon County Courthouse.

Linda Schlott, executive director of the Franklin Main Street Program encourages all Macon County veterans to participate in this event. “These men and women who have faithfully served and those who are currently serving our country are heroes and we need to give them the resounding support they deserve.”

And according to Schlott not just the veterans but the entire community is encouraged to attend and show their support. “We want to see lots of red, white and blue all along the parade route. We hope to see the downtown area packed with a show of support for our service men and women.”

The route will take veterans from Town Hall at the top of Town Hill in downtown Franklin to the Gazebo on the Square in downtown Franklin. Special banners will lead each group of veterans along the parade route according to the war or time period of service.

“We realize there are many veterans who may not be able to walk the route. I encourage them to give me a call and we’ll arrange for transportation for them during the parade,” said Schlott.

Immediately following the ceremony, veterans and their families are invited to a chili luncheon at the VFW Post on West Palmer Street.
