News Community WCU political science students raise money for Shops with Cops

Western Carolina University students celebrate raising $1,000 to benefit Shops with Cops with representatives from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and WCU Police.Students in a freshman seminar centered on active citizenship raised more than $1,000 toward the Shops with Cops program through the Jackson County Office of the Sheriff.

Students chose the cause they wanted to support and collected donations for the initiative, which pairs law enforcement officers with children from the community to shop for Christmas gifts for the children’s families.

“The course is all about how individuals have the power to make incredible differences within their own communities – to better the lives of others,” said Fred Fisher, who taught the seminar.

The group celebrated reaching the fundraising goal of $1,000 with a November cookout and ceremonial presentation of funds to Sgt. Johnny Hollifield of the sheriff’s office. WCU police also participate in Shops with Cops.
