The Franklin Garden Club, in cooperation with the Macon County Fair Board, will hold its annual flower show at the 60th Annual Macon County Fair. The flower show will be open to the public starting at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 11, and will continue through Sunday, Sept. 15. The show will be located in Building D of the Wayne Proffitt Agricultural Center on South Georgia Road (Hwy. 441.)
Both full-time and seasonal residents of Macon County are invited to exhibit flowers and plants at the show; entries will be accepted between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
“We encourage multiple entries, but exhibitors may enter only one item in each of the over 70 subdivisions of 12 classes” said Jeanne Vaughters, president of the Franklin Garden Club.
Various types of cut flowers make up half of the classes: “Annuals,” “Perennials,” “Roses,” “Bulbs, Corms & Tubers,” “Flowering Vines” and “Shrubs or Trees in Flower or Fruit.” A variety of different classes of plants make up five other classes: “Blooming Plants,” “Bonsai,” “Cacti & Succulents,” “Foliage Plants” and “Orchids.”
The highlight of the show is the final class of themed artistic arrangements that include: “Autumn Harvest” with fresh flowers and fresh fruit or vegetables; “Gem Country,” a miniature arrangement; “Nantahala Forest,” with only fresh greens; “Pickin’ on the Square,” using fresh or dried material; “Pumpkin Fest,” arranged in a pumpkin or gourd; and “Wayah Bald” with all dried material.
Eligible entries must have been grown by the exhibitor or owned by them for at least three months. This paperback book is available for free at the Macon County Cooperative Extension office at the Agricultural Services Center in Franklin just off Highlands Road at 193 Thomas Heights Road. Exhibitors should pay particular attention to the size of blooms or number of stems required in some subdivisions.
For the protection of everyone’s entries, each entry must be healthy and free of insects and dead leaves. Vases for annual flowers will be available for loan at the show. Clean pots and well groomed, trimmed plants are encouraged since appearance is an important factor in judging.
In addition to a Best of Show award, judges provided by the Cooperative Extension office will award first, second and third place ribbons in each subdivision. Exhibitors will not be allowed in the building during the judging on Wednesday morning from 9 a.m. to noon.
Although members of the Franklin Garden Club will water plants, exhibitors are asked to keep an eye on their plants throughout the five days of the show and to remove or replace dead or wilted flowers as needed. Exhibitors must reclaim their entries between 2 and 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15.
