Volunteers from Franklin and Highlands joined the Highlands Chamber of Commerce, the Franklin Chamber of Commerce, Stay and Play in the Smokies and Venture Local Franklin in an effort to clean up trash along Highway 64/28.
The road that snakes through the Cullasaja River Gorge is an attractive destination for visitors to the area.
According to Matt Bateman from Stay and Play in the Smokies, the clean-up was a much needed effort.
Volunteers gathered aluminum cans, cigarette butts, paper products and other forms of litter along the road ways often having to go over guardrails and down embankments to get to the trash.
The 35 volunteers gathered 133 bags of trash.
