Macon Program for Progress Head Start parents and staff developed the Back to School Angels Project with a goal to provide backpacks to children leaving Head Start and going into Macon County Public School kindergarten classrooms in the fall. Head Start children receive free backpacks that are filled with ageappropriate school supplies.
MPP, a community action agency, has a limited number of projects that are self-supporting and depend on local donations. The Back to School Angels was developed based on parents in need of assistance who are experiencing financial difficulties.
Parents don’t always have extra funds to buy school supplies, and Back to School Angels project assures them that their Head Start child has the supplies they need and they can begin their first day of school confident and prepared,
This year MPP Head Start will transition 97 children to kindergarten classrooms across the county and with the difficult economy and so many parents out of work, it is estimated that the majority of families will apply for assistance. Backpacks will be supplied to children as funds allow. Whether you wish to help one child or multiple children, any donation will be greatly appreciated. No donation is too small or too large.
Over the years, more than 550 backpacks have been given away to kindergarten-bound Head Start students with the help of community donations. If you or a sponsoring group would like to help, send your tax-deductable donation to MPP Back to School Angels, PO Box 700 Franklin, NC 28744. Children, parents, and MPP extend heartfelt appreciation for always supporting us as we strive to help families in need in Macon County.
