Franklin’s Relay for Life held its annual Survivors Dinner recently to honor and give tribute to cancer survivors in Macon County. It was held at Cowee Baptist Church with dinner provided by local merchants, followed by a concert given by Cowee Baptist Church choir.

Joy Sloope was the guest speaker and Phyllis Castle recognized the survivors.

This year’s Relay for Life will be held Friday at the Franklin High School Track with opening ceremonies beginning at 7 p.m.


American Legion Post 108 Ladies Auxiliary is collecting items to pack into care packages to be sent to local soldiers stationed around the world.

Donations may be made at the American Legion Post, 614 West Main Street.

Three FHS seniors chosen to receive $1000 each.

The Wayne Proffitt Memorial Scholarship was awarded for its third year last Saturday, during the Future Farmers of America annual fundraising banquet at the Wayne Proffitt Agricultural Center on Georgia Road.

With the scent of barbecue in the air, and the sounds of Madison County-based bluegrass troupe Appalachian Harmony, more than a hundred people turned out for the event.


It was all about the pets last Saturday, as the fifth annual Super Adoption Day was held at Westgate Plaza in Franklin.

Augmented with barbecue, ice cream, pony rides, classic rock performed by the Lost Dog Blues Band and a dunking tank, Super Adoption Day has traditionally proven to be one of the more popular springtime events in Franklin. The event showcased adoptable pets from Macon County Animal Control and the Macon County Humane Society.

What made this year’s event especially successful was the addition of shelter pets from Bryson City’s P.A.W.S., Atlanta’s Safe Harbor and Machacek of Andrews.
