American Legion Post’s Bingo night needs support

With the economy recovering at a painfully slow rate, it is more important than ever to work together to take care of the community. Several organizations throughout Macon County have offered a helping hand to lessen the burden on their neighbors, and the members of American Legion Post 108 have been doing their part by hosting a night of bingo every Friday night to raise money for community needs.

All of the proceeds earned during the bingo games get put directly back into the community.

With temperatures beginning to drop, and the coldest months of winter right around the corner, Franklin native and local Farm Bureau agent, Patrick Jenkins, is gearing up for the third annual “Cold for a Cause” event. Jenkins will load up in a crane which will be parked in front of the Farm Bureau office on Highlands rd. He will remain in the box from noon on Friday until noon on Sunday, totalling 48 hours.

The rain that has poured down around Macon County all week is expected to taper off just in time for Jenkins climb into the crane and make the trip above the county on Friday afternoon.

Zane and Nina Mashburn Wood of Franklin will celebrate their 68th anniversary on Jan. 15.

They are the parents of Devannah Long, Wanda Ashe, Marshall Wood and Dottie Nicholson.

They reside at Macon Valley Nursing Center and enjoy visitors and cards.

Although government offices will be closed on Monday to recognize Martin Luther King Day, several community organizations will be hosting events throughout the weekend to honor King's life and legacy.

The Human Relations Council will be hosting their annual event on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 3:00 pm at First United Methodist Church on Harrison Avenue. The Council's award-winning C-Square Band will present a program of Freedom Songs. The Council will take up an offering and serve a light supper after the program.
