Siblings meet in Franklin for the first time

It was a tearful reunion at the Carolina Motel in Franklin on Tuesday when Barbara Condron traveled ten hours from Michigan to meet her two brothers that she didn't even know existed just a mere three weeks ago.

Up until Condron was 18 years old, she had no idea that she was adopted; before her mother passed away due to cancer, she revealed to Condron that she was adopted. The only information Condron had to go on was that her biological mother was a distant relative of her adoptive parents.

After many months of preparation and intense fundraising Relay for Life Highlands will commence this Friday, Aug. 19, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Highlands Recreation Park.

Highlanders held a variety of events throughout the year to raise money to fight cancer. Events like Bark for Life, Dance for Life, book sales, raffles and Friday night concerts.

The top fundraisers so far are the Just for You team with $12,396 raised; Highlands Scouts are second with $6,435 and Fressers Eatery comes in at third with $5,324.

It was where Louisiana cajun flair meets good North Carolina southern style at the 15th annual Smoky Mountain Shrimp Boil held Saturday, Aug. 13, at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

The meal consisted of boiled shrimp with either cocktail sauce or butter, kielbasa, whole red potatoes, corn-on-the-cob, cajun jambalaya, bread and pie. Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Rick Westerman wished to express his special thanks to the people at Cajun Connection for cooking the jambalaya. All of the other cooking was done by Habitat for Humanity volunteers.

Each year, in August, the Federated Franklin Woman’s Club holds its Annual Flea Market to help children in Macon County.

Club members empty their closets, choose a special item from their home for the new “golden flea table” being added this year and encourage friends and neighbors to donate items.

Truck loads of kitchen items, tools, electronics, linens, books, jewelry, Christmas items, baked goods, lamps, furniture, children’s clothes and toys, and a special ladies boutique are brought in by supportive husbands and volunteer helpers.
