Ashleigh Moore Memorial Scholarship is awarded to Emily DeForrest.

DeForrest, a 2011 graduate of Macon Early College and Southwestern Community College, receives a check from Tina Marie Smith, mother of Ashleigh Moore.

Also pictured are Patrick Moore, Sean Moore and Wendy Moore.

Ashleigh was a student at MEC who passed away in the spring of 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Lowell and Betty Wolfe of Lynchburg, Va. formerly of Franklin, N.C., will be celebrating their 65th Wedding Anniversary on Sept. by taking a lunch cruise on the Virginia Dare Paddle Boat around Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta, Va.

Their son, Greg and wife, Sue will be hosting the cruise for the family.

The former Betty Sarver married Lowell Wolfe in 1946 at the Church of the Brethren in Battle Creek, Mich. where they met at the age of 7.

In 1976 they moved to Florida and lived in Osprey, Sarasota, and Bradenton until 2002, when they moved to Franklin.

The Mountain High Republican Women’s Club (MHRWC) will hold their First Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show on Friday, Aug. 19,11:30 a.m. at the Highlands Country Club in Highlands.

The fashion show features Carlisle clothing, a highly regarded home show line of fashion.

A line of fashion jewelry will be shown as well and open for bid at the silent auction. Auction items include everything from fashion accessories, home decorative accessories to restaurant and get-away gift certificates.

Elementary school-aged children and their families are invited to the Arts Council’s free ARTSaturday workshop on Saturday, Aug. 13, 10 till noon, at Big Bear Shelter on the Little Tennessee River Greenway in Franklin.

During the two-hour workshop participants will learn basic dances from around the world and here at home. There’s no pre-registration; children should wear play clothes and come for any part of the session. Adults must stay with their children for this fun learning activity for the whole family.


Big Bear Shelter is adjacent to Wesley’s Playground, just across the river from the East Main Street McDonalds. The monthly ARTSaturday series is produced by the Arts Council of Macon County, and is supported by the Grassroots Arts Program of the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources.
