Earlier this month, The Rotary Club of Franklin honored the youth in Macon County by recognizing their educational accomplishments. As part of its annual Academic Excellence Banquet last Tuesday, Rotarians gave local students $18,000 in scholarships.

Western Carolina University Chancellor Dr. David Belcher addressed students as the event's guest speaker.


Some of the hardest working employees at the Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts are actually not employees at all. They are volunteers. Whenever guests have questions about the show, need help finding their seats, or just navigating the theatre, they go to the experts at hand, the ushers. With an average of 150 ushers rotating between the performing arts center's nearly 80 shows a year, the individuals that best know the ins and outs of the theatre are all volunteers.


The rain clouds cleared early Friday morning and the sun broke through to provide perfect weather for the 2013 Smoky Mountain Far West Regional Special Olympic Games. More than 200 athletes from Cherokee, Graham, Clay and Macon counties and the Qualla Boundary took to the field to compete in the games, which included an assortment of 24 different olympic events.

The olympic games began with members of the Macon County Sheriff's Department, Franklin Police Department, Highlands Police Department and N.C. Highway Patrol running in the torch to lead the Parade of Athletes around the Macon Middle School track.


The National Day of Prayer was observed on the square in downtown Franklin Thursday, May 2.

Ministers from area Christian churches led those assembled in prayer for families, churches, schools, businesses, government and others.

The theme for this year’s observance was taken from Matthew 12:21 that says “In His name the nations will put their hope.”
