With store windows decked out with holiday decorations, a friendly elf and even festive eggnog, despite spring-time weather, this year's Winter Wonderland filled downtown Franklin Friday night for shopping, holiday treats, and of course, Christmas music.

Luminaires lit the sidewalks and Christmas lights provided a festive glow for carolers, who entertained guests as they moved from store to store shopping. Yuletide carols were performed throughout the night by the South Macon Elementary Chorus, the Arts Council, Franklin High School's B-Naturals, The Carolines, Nikwasi Dulcimer Players and more...

Tim Chavis and Matthew Pruett of the Franklin Fire Department lent a hand — and a ladder truck — to help decorate the Rolling Acres Remembrance Tree.

Every year, Rolling Acres dedicates the blue spruce, now 20 feet tall, to all park family members and servicemen everywhere who are no longer with us.

A ceremony will be held at the park in which the residents will say a prayer and sing a song in memory of lost loved ones.

Western Carolina University will hold commencement exercises Saturday, Dec. 15, to honor its fall graduating class and a group of newly minted WCU alumni who received degrees after this year’s summer school sessions.

The 2 p.m. ceremony at the Ramsey Regional Activity Center is open to everyone and no tickets are required for admission. Chancellor David O. Belcher will preside over commencement and deliver the charge to the fall semester degree candidates and summer graduates.

WCU’s fall class includes about 695 students who are currently completing academic requirements to receive their degrees, and approximately 545 of those students will be participating in the ceremony. Another 150 WCU graduates who completed degree requirements during summer school and who already have been conferred degrees also will be donning caps and gowns for the event.

Patti McClure of Franklin spoke at The NewHearts Thankful Banquet recently. McClure is a heart transplant recipient having received her new heart at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.

The Newhearts is associated with the Carolinas Medical Center of Charlotte as a support group for people who have had a heart transplant, or people who are waiting for a transplant and their immediate families.

The group provides educational support through bimonthly meetings and special classes held at the hospital.
