Rising country music star and North Georgia native Corey Smith will be returning to the Orange Peel in Asheville on Dec. 29 to perform for what he says must be the dozenth time.

The small-town boy from Jefferson, Ga., started his professional career as a high school social studies teacher while moonlighting as a musician before deciding to become a fulltime, professional singer-songwriter when he was 28.

With nearly a decade passing since he decided to make the leap to full-time musician, Smith has demanded national attention and has grown a fan-base comparable to any rising mainstream artist. Smith, who was referred to as a $4 million musician in 2007, has continued to grow his fan base and build his reputation by taking it back to the basics.

Thanks to a large contingent of shoppers from Western Carolina University, the opening weekend of the 29th annual Dillsboro Lights and Luminaries event was one of the best in years, according to town merchants.

Hundreds of WCU faculty, staff and students convened in the town Friday, Dec. 7, for WCU Night at the event.

“We had a fantastic night,” said Lisa Potts, co-owner of Nancy Tut’s Christmas Shop and co-president of the Dillsboro Merchants Association.

The Franklin Lions Club in partnership with Ruby Cinemas, provides movies twice a week throughout the summer for kids and their families as well as summer camp participants at no charge. The program has been offered for many years, occurring two days a week. Two movies are shown twice a day and new ones are offered every week. Thousands of young people and adults have taken advantage of this free summer program.

The Franklin Young professionals were recently awarded a plaque for their participation in the NC Big Sweep - river cleanup by Gooder Graphix and Guy Gooder. As the Franklin Big Sweep organizer, Gooder made the presentation to FYP President, Mandy Snow Lail, and FYP Marketing Chair, Matt Bateman at their recent social at Chris & Charlie’s Pizza.

The North Carolina Big Sweep, Inc. is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that plans and coordinates the statewide Big Sweep. The NC Big Sweep’s mission is to create awareness and to encourage good environmental stewardship of our watersheds.
