Re-sale store, annual Shrimp Boil are major sources.

Macon County Habitat for Humanity recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of operation for its resale store in Franklin. The Habitat ReSale Store is one of several sources of funding for projects conducted by the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Profits from the store sales are plowed into conducting housing rehabilitation projects in Macon County and for operating the local organization.

The store is located at 56 West Palmer Street in Franklin and is one of the premier non-profit repurposing stores in the area, said Debby Westerman. Clothing, furniture and household goods are located in the front portion of the store, which is managed by Margaret Smoot, while Phil Rumans manages the construction material warehouse in the back of the facility.

Last Saturday, Macon residents took to Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Big Lots to donate school supplies for Macon County children.

Headed by Macon County School System employee Karen Norton and held in conjunction with tax-free weekend, school supplies, which began being distributed on Wednesday, were collected for students.

On Saturday, July 28, Disability Partners conducted its first annual poker run fundraiser in honor of two individuals, Howard Papke and Wayne Smith. These two men were volunteers who began and devoted more than 15 years of service to the Cyberpals program.

The program has been successful in placing more than 3,000 donated and refurbished computers in homes of people with disabilities.

At right, Susan Hunter of Disability Partners presents Teresa McDowell, the raffle prize winner with a guitar autographed by Kenny Chesney. This guitar was donated to Disability Partners to help raise money for the Cyberpals program.
