Students throughout the county participated in a “What it Means to be an American” essay contest hosted by Franklin’s Rotary Club, Read2Me, and The Macon County News.

The essay contest was modeled after the contest that Dr. Gloria Houston wrote about in “Littlejim,” in which the book’s main character participated for the Kansas City Star.

The winners of the contest received a $50 cash prize courtesy of the Rotary Club and had the opportunity to read their essays for Western Carolina University’s chancellor, Dr. David Belcher at the May 30 Rotary Club meeting.

Catch the Spirit of Appalachia (CSA) has awarded the Elmer and Irene Hooper Civic Leadership Scholarship to Autumn Skye Baird.

Established in memory of Elmer Hooper by his wife, Irene Hooper, and CSA, the fund provides financial support for deserving young students from rural Jackson, Macon, Haywood and Swain counties in North Carolina.

Baird, a student from Blue Ridge School in Glenville, has demonstrated excellence in volunteerism and leadership and is committed to making a difference in the community.

Franklin’s Rotary Club spotlighted education during a luncheon on Wednesday afternoon. Five students at Franklin High School were presented with the annual Roy Rickman Scholarship.

Scholarship recipients are selected by the Rotary Club based on academics, leadership, and citizenship.
