Sylva kicked off the holiday season last Saturday with the annual Christmas Parade.

This year’s theme was “A Storybook Christmas,” and floats were judged by a three-member panel which included Jackson County Arts Council President Sylvia Smythe and a representative each from Western Carolina University and Southwestern Community College.

Coming in third place was St. David's Episcopal Church, followed by Liberty Baptist in second place and Skyland Care Center took the cake with a first place ribbon.

Each night throughout the month of December, community organizations and churches will be hosting “Christmas in the Park” at the Macon County Rec Park.

From food drives for CareNet, to clothes and coat give-a-ways, the event combines music and holiday decorations with the true meaning of Christmas.

Franklin High School's Student Body President Drew Simpson, along with Vice President Jacob Davis and Senior Class Representative Danielle Jimison presented the 1st annual Macon County Canned Food Drive trophy to Franklin High School Principal Chris Baldwin.

FHS collected the most cans in a countywide food drive sponsored by the FHS Student Council.

American Legion Post 108 member Jim McGill along with Louise Womack (right) presented two checks totalling $360 to Read2Me member Diane Cotton (far left) in support of bringing the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to local children.

The program provides one free age-appropriate book per year for every child birth to five years old in Macon County who signs up.
