Franklin local Duncan Thompson was the lucky winner of the 2012 Davidson's Gallery of Guns.com Television show trivia contest. The nationwide contest is open to viewers of the Gallery of Guns.com show which airs on the Sportsman’s Channel. Participants had to correctly answer the on-air trivia question before they could be entered into the national drawing which was held on January 10, 2012.

Mr. Thompson received his choice of any firearm featured during the 2011 season of Gallery of Guns Television with a maximum value of $2,995. Davidson's was pleased to ship a brand new Les Baer Customs Ultimate .308 Match to Black Dog Guns of Franklin, located at 520A E. Main St., where Duncan Thompson claimed his prize.

The Town of Franklin and the Franklin Main Street Program invite members of the business community to a special meeting on Thursday, February 23, 2012, to assist the business owners in preparing for the upcoming motorcycle event. The meeting will be held beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the lower level of Town Hall.

“This meeting is to educate and inform business owners such as vacation rentals, restaurants, campgrounds, and others on how they can benefit from the upcoming Smoky Mountain Rumble motorcycle rally,” said Linda Schlott, Franklin Main Street Program Executive Director.

Kenia Alvarez knows full well about the economic advantages of living in the United States, particularly Western North Carolina (WNC), thanks to the Sylva, Franklin, and Cashiers Rotary Clubs. Complimentary of the latter organizations, Alvarez embarked on a four week tour of WNC to observe higher education institutions and public school systems throughout the region, spending the week of Feb. 6-10 in Macon County.

In 2004, a member of the Rotary Club of Boquete, Panama contacted Sylva’s Rotary Club and asked for help with funding for school supplies. That initial request ultimately culminated into Project Panama, an initiative aimed at increasing awareness and collaboration efforts between WNC and Panamanian communities. The project is why Alvarez, who has been a public school teacher in Panama for ten years, was given the opportunity to gain a new perspective on teaching by visiting Southern Appalachia for the first time. When asked what she has liked and disliked about the area, she responded that there was not a single thing she did not enjoy about the mountains of WNC, while also expressing her appreciation for the beauty and cleanliness of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
