Community working together to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer

The Macon County community is coming together to recognize November as National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month. Led by the mother-daughter team Margaret and Teresa Ramsey, the community is joining forces to bring awareness to one of the deadliest cancers.

Inspired by her daughter, Diane Ramsey Forsyth, Margaret felt compelled to begin a tireless journey to bring awareness to the disease.


The Foster Care and Adoption Network held its Far West Conference of 2012 this weekend in Franklin.

The event was held during “National Adoption Awareness Month,” a time set aside each year to celebrate and promote the importance of adoption, and to recognize and thank adoptive parents who have participated in bringing family, love and support into a child’s life.

The conference, a consortium of 12 agencies representing the seven counties of Western North Carolina, was held at The Fun Factory.


The Franklin Main Street Program recently dedicated the second bench in their latest beautification initiative in the downtown district.

The late Mike Schlott, husband of Linda Schlott, was recipient of this honor.

“First of all, I would like to thank everyone that donated for the purchase of Mike’s bench,” said Linda Schlott, executive director of Franklin’s Main Street Program. “Sissy Pattillo and Bo Bryant spearheaded the collection of donations and the dedication ceremony. Mike would be just amazed.


Pine Grove School Community Center, on Peeks Creek Road, Franklin, presented its scholarship for this year to Clay F. Creighton at a meeting last month.

Clay is the son of Jack and Teresa Creighton in the Buck Creek community.

Clay will be attending Southwestern Community College in Sylva in the Criminal Justice Program.

Now in its second year, the scholarship was presented by President Lyman F. Lance Jr. of the Pine Grove School Community.
