Continuing education courses are being held at Southwestern Community College’s Oconaluftee Institute for Cultural Art in Cherokee.
— Oil Painting Basics will be Thursdays, Feb. 17-24 from 6-8:30 p.m. at OICA. Instructor Jeff Marley will offer an opportunity to explore the basic methods and theories of oil painting. Participants will learn how to select paint, brushes, mediums and surfaces and experiment with various brush techniques and the palette knife,. Participants should provide their own materials, which include a basic paint set, selection of brushes, linseed oil, turpentine, and a surface to paint on, such as stretched canvas or canvas board. The cost is $44.
— Bookbinding will introduce bookbinding and provide materials and instruction to create a case-bound blank book of 60 or more pages. It will be taught by Phyllis Jarvinen from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9. Participants will learn the basic techniques of bookbinding, enabling them to create their own hardbound journals or sketchbooks. With the increasing use of electronic media to communicate and to share published and public information, the physical format of the book becomes an artistic tool for expressing visual ideas in a physically interactive format. The cost is $34.
