Western Carolina University’s Office of Continuing Education will offer a one-day workshop for business managers and human resources personnel from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in Room 143 of WCU’s Cordelia Camp Building.
The morning session, “The Organization Reward System,” will focus on how companies use rewards to provide incentives to employees. Topics to be covered include intrinsic and extrinsic rewards; relating rewards to performance; factors affecting job satisfaction; components of employee compensation; and government and union influence on compensation.
The afternoon session, “Employee Benefits and Risk Management,” will be an examination of common benefit types that often raise questions for companies. Those include legally required benefits such as Social Security, unemployment and worker’s compensation; retirement-related benefits such as pensions, 401K plans, 403B plans and employer-sponsored IRAs; and insurance-related benefits such as health, dental and life insurance. Also, the session will cover issues such as paid holidays and vacations.
Workshop instructor Bruce Young, formerly vice president of human resources for the Stackpole Corp. for 27 years, has taught at Pennsylvania State University and Webster University. He has been a consultant focusing on employee relations and other topics since 1994.
The early registration deadline is Friday, April 13. The $69 fee includes a networking lunch. To register or for more information, go to http://learn.wcu.edu and click on “Professional Development” or call 828-227-7397.
