News Education Western Carolina to host literacy conference Feb. 25

Western Carolina University’s College of Education and Allied Professions invites educators from throughout the region to attend a one-day conference focusing on literacy across the curriculum.

The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, in the A.K. Hinds University Center Grandroom on the WCU campus.

“Literacy across the Curriculum” includes breakout sessions and a keynote address by Katie Wood Ray, a full-time writer and researcher on the teaching of writing who leads workshops and summer institutes across the nation. Ray has experience as an elementary and middle school teacher as a developer at Columbia University’s Reading and Writing Project, and as co-editor of Primary Voices K-6, a former publication of the National Council of Teachers of English.

Breakout sessions will emphasize the multifaceted aspects of literacy – reading, writing, thinking and speaking – and provide insight into how educators can address literacy issues in a variety of subject areas. Topics include digital storytelling, outstanding science trade books, the teaching of controversial topics, content area comprehension, how to connect with reluctant readers, and many more.

The registration fee for the conference, which qualifies attendees for 0.7 continuing education units (or CEUs), is $50 ($25 for students) and includes lunch. Registration deadline is Monday, Feb. 21. A conference flier and electronic registration form are available at www.wcu.edu/9453.asp.
