At the NC Excellence in Community College Awards ceremony April 19 in Raleigh Darrin Bark will represent not only Southwestern Community College but the Oconaluftee Institute for Cultural Arts.

With the theme of “The Great Within the 58,” the ceremony will honor the top student from each of the state’s 58 community colleges. Bark, who is from the Paintown community of Cherokee, graduated in December with his Associate in Fine Arts degree from OICA.

The Board of Education unanimously approved the 2012/2013 school calendar during Monday night’s regularly schedule.

The calendar, which is now being sent to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and State Board of Education for approval, has designated August 9 as the first student day for next school year, with the first teacher workday falling on August 2 and the last day of school for students will fall on May 24.

• Family Storytimes for ages 18 mos. - 5 yrs. Monday and Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. (Kids, wear your pajamas, bring a favorite stuffed animal or doll and listen to bedtime stories.)

• Tuesday, 4-5pm, K-5th Grade, Club Discovery! This month’s theme is ‘Nature.’ Don’t forget to sign up ahead of time at the Children’s Desk.

• Wednesday, Home School Book Talk for 3rd – 5th grade, 1:00p.m.

The Macon County Academic Foundation will hold the 25th annual Academic Auction at Cartoogechaye Elementary on Saturday March 31.

All proceeds from the event are set aside each year to fund educational activities for classes throughout the county.This year, one project that the funds from past auctions were used for was to help construct an outdoor classroom at Mountain View Intermediate.
