News State / Region “Click It or Ticket” yields 10,288 safety belt violations

Transportation Secretary Conti announces campaign totals

North Carolina Transportation Secretary Gene Conti announced today that 10,288 drivers and passengers were cited for seat belt and child passenger safety violations during the “Click It or Ticket” campaign, which began May 21 and ended June 3.

“Buckling up is a simple action that could save your life,” said Conti. “The stepped up patrols enable law enforcement officers to remind motorists that wearing your seat belt is not only the smart thing to do, it’s the law.”

State and local law enforcement officers issued the citations during more than 7,630 checkpoints and stepped-up patrols. In addition to cracking down on unrestrained drivers and passengers, officers across the state charged 2,308 motorists with driving while impaired. Officers also issued a total of 11,278 criminal violations, including 2,305 drug charges, 116 stolen vehicles and 1,695 fugitives captured.

“Click It or Ticket” is administered by the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program. GHSP sponsored several “Click It or Ticket” nights at minor league baseball parks across the state during the campaign to increase awareness about seat belt safety.
