Opinion Letters Early reading can help children be successful

Literacy is a cornerstone to academic success for all children. Reading is the access point for all other content areas during a child’s educational years. The sooner children are able to read, and read well, the more successful they are in school and in life.

Read2Me is a public awareness campaign recently initiated in Macon County. Its purpose is to encourage the community at large to become highly invested in promoting the goal of children learning to read early and well, helping each child realize his or her potential in school and in life.

We believe it is the responsibility of the community as a whole to embrace and promote the importance of early literacy and do all we can to support every child in becoming literate. The Read2Me committee has developed a three-fold mission:

1. To change the educational culture of Macon County by making early reading a priority for every person and facilitate community involvement in this process;

2. To get books into the hands of all children beginning at birth;

3. Provide training and education for parents about their important role in raising a reader.

The guiding question for Macon County is where will someone in Macon County hear about the importance of reading with a child today? The Read2Me committee is comprised of representatives of various business and civic organizations. We would like to invite everyone in Macon County to help with this important community endeavor. We are seeking people and businesses interested in volunteering in any capacity to help spread the word — and practice — that early reading is essential and that reading matters in Macon.

A planning meeting has been scheduled for Monday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. at Macon Program for Progress Training Annex. All interested individuals are invited to attend and become a part of the planning process as we decide how to best expand awareness and move forward to achieve early literacy for the children of Macon County.
