Two articles in the 02-17-12 issue of The Franklin Press caught my eye. One was titled, “Legal or Ethical: The twain don’t meet” the other was “Board axes reference to slope maps”. I am in favor of some sort of disclosure if there is any element that could cause me and my family our lives or life savings although I know this would/could cause a drop in sales a loss of the almighty dollar as it did to Toyota when they had the problem with thier runaway cars.
I worked with a survey crew that ran topo on a homesite where a lady was killed in a landslide in Maggie Valley several years ago. The homesite had been cut out of a hillside so steep you almost had to crawl to go up. The homesite had a sheer cut about 15’ high only a few feet from the foundation. Looking at the soil you did not need someone coming up from Raleigh to tell you it was very unstable.
Several years ago I asked a former Chairman of the County Commisioners when Macon County would have any planning regulations passed and he told me “When the last dollar is made.”
As a citizen of Macon County I know that when it comes to betting on being legal or ethical my money will be on legal everytime.
