I am fortunate enough to be a “guest” of Macon County for about six months, coming up from Sarasota, Fla. I have lived in Sarasota since 1947 when my parents car arrived and I was in the back seat. Sarasota is my home and when I tell someone I am leaving for the summer, if they ask if I am going home, I say, “No, I am running away from home.” Sarasota has grown from a population of probably 12,000 to 300,000 during my 65 years living there.
They are not exactly the same words as “minding your business,” but the growth in the population has been mainly from those moving to Sarasota who have no qualms about offering “how we do it back home.” Many years ago the Sarasota hometown people adopted the airline slogan “Delta is ready when you are,” almost offering to buy the return ticket. Since there are so many Florida people in Macon County for the summer I am sure some of you said this and just maybe, some of you were told this. With the growth, the changes came.
Coming to Franklin is not just for the summer weather but it is also for the friendly people, the scenery and the memories of 1947 downtown Sarasota that come back when I drive through the original downtown Franklin. Please, please as the reply to the first letter stated, as long as you possibly can, don’t “mind your own business,” help those in need, give sympathy as needed, thank those who respond to emergencies and maybe help those who are fudging on the laws.
