Opinion Letters Campaign mailer deliberately misleading

President Reagan famously once said, “There you go again!” I believe I uttered that same statement when I received Jim Davis’ most recent mailer. It’s long on sensation, but falls short of the truth. Once again, as this election draws near, these deceitful mailers have begun filling my mailbox.

It seems the Davis campaign is willing to spend a lot of outside money on mailers hoping people aren’t fact checking what they receive. One of their mailers was already debunked by The Macon County News as being misleading; they would know because it cited that very same newspaper as its source.

This latest mailer that arrived recently from Davis implies that Senator John Snow voted to let a convicted African-American murderer off death row. This is an absolutely false and desperate attack. Under the Racial Justice Act not a single death row inmate was ever released from prison. This legislation only allowed death sentences to be commuted to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Mr. Davis either doesn’t know what he is talking about, or he is deliberately misleading you. Either way it is shameful to send a campaign mailer to voters with this kind of nonsense.

In 2010, almost a million dollars in outside money was spent targeting this Senate race in order to misinform voters. So much so that these negative attack ads received national attention when a journalist with the New Yorker wrote, “Snow was being targeted in a way that misconstrued his record. He supports the death penalty. He is a conservative.” Davis and his friends have done this before and voters need to really question anything that comes from him.
