Opinion Letters Supporters offer matching grant for Read2Me

Read2Me is a community effort to promote reading, with a focus on children, from birth to age five. As part of our mission, we distribute books to children at various events and provide parental training on the importance of reading. We now have an exciting opportunity to partner with the Literacy Council of Highlands and The Dolly Parton Imagination Library program. Through this combined effort, we can reach many more children in Macon County.

Dolly’s program provides age-appropriate books each month directly to preschool children born in Macon County. Many of these children have little or no exposure to books and the worlds that books open. Recent articles in The Macon County News and The Franklin Press provide graphic details of the problem in Macon County. Data shows that over 50 percent of our children are ill-prepared for kindergarten, lacking skills with recognizing letters and sounds, identifying colors and shapes, and having a basic vocabulary. We believe that this community can make a difference.

The Literacy Council has raised some funds to initiate the partnership with The Dolly Parton Imagination Library, but we are still short. To meet the shortfall, three generous supporters are offering a grant to match community donations, dollar for dollar, up to $7,500. A condition of the grant is that we must collect the matching funds by the end of December. One hundred and fifty (150) donations of $30 will ensure that every child receives one book per month, from birth to age five. Your $30 provides a scholarship for one child, for a full year, and with the grant, instantly becomes a scholarship supporting two local children for a year. Your contribution of $30, or whatever amount you can afford, would be a great Christmas present to a local child. All of the money donated goes directly to the Dolly Parton effort; there are no local administrative costs. Together we can make a world of difference.
