Congratulation, the Republican legislature just gave everyone in N.C. a tax cut. Well, maybe not, just those whose income is over $84,000. If your income is over $400,000, your tax cut maybe as much as $10,000. More great news if you are a major corporation, you tax rate was cut substantially. Of course, if you are a small business, you probably will see your overall tax bill go up.

In fact, two out of every three dollars in tax cuts dollars will go to the top one percent of North Carolina wealthiest citizens. But, 80 percent of North Carolina citizens will pay more in all kinds of taxes under this new Republican budget.

It was winter of 1979, and I was in the middle of a college degree at a large university. Things weren’t going well. Oh, academically I was doing okay, but socially, emotionally, spiritually, I needed a break. I recall returning to my dorm room one afternoon after class, tossing my books on the floor, and heading back out for a walk, to help clear my head from all the thoughts that were crowding it. I wound up wandering High Street, the main commercial drag. The scent of stale beer wafted from the open doors of the many bars that lined the street, calling to mind the hangovers I had experienced during my two years there.

Across the United States the 50th anniversary of the "March on Washington" and Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" speech have been recently observed. King hoped to see a generation of black Americans who would "not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

Ironically, and perhaps contrary to his desire, for the past 40-odd years our nation has indulged a system called "Affirmative Action" which demands a person be evaluated (judged) only by the color of his skin and nothing else. We have since added "Equal Opportunity" to the mix so now we have affirmative action based on gender as well as race.

On Wednesday, Aug. 23, near Spokane, Wash., Delbert Belton, a 88-year-old WW II veteran was beaten to death by two teens for no apparent reason. A week earlier, a 23- yearold college student and baseball player visiting from Australia was gunned down by three teens, and their reason for this? They were bored and had nothing else to do. In Brunswick Ga. a young mother, Sherry West, was being robbed by two teenagers and was shot in the leg, then they pointed the gun at her 13-month-old baby and shot little Antonio in the face which killed him. And we ask ourselves, “Why, how can this be?”
