What a pleasure to finally read an opinion from the Macon County News' editor that I thoroughly agree with. In your Opinion column of 9/13/12 entitled “The Culture of Unemployment” I found mirrored many of my feelings about the dependency and apathy of the unemployed. While these attitudes will not be those of all the individuals who are unemployed or have given up searching for a job, I have heard people in those situations express the feeling that it is the duty of the government to solve their problems.

In the 1980s I was a computer coordinator and data processing manager in a school system. (I was also a science, chemistry and math teacher for 10 years.)

When the comptroller put together our budget for the year he used hard numbers whenever possible and never used optimistic estimates of teacher absence, vacation days, or utility consumption. Using such unrealistic data to project a budget is looking for trouble. Our budget was presented to the Board of Education where heated discussions always resulted in repeated revisions. Exceeding the budget just did not happen.

Like many people who read your recent correction of a mailer from the Davis campaign, I was a little confused about how he misrepresented your paper’s report. It is very common for campaigns to cite a paper as a source, but then to put their own interpretation on what the paper reported. Your paper reported that, “John Snow stated that the funding that was taken away from Planned Parenthood while the General Assembly was led by a Republican majority, not only places stress on services such as abortion.....” So, the paper reported this and the Davis mailer simply used you as a source where someone could find proof of it.

The Macon County Democratic and Republican Parties both agree that it is not only illegal but against all the principals and values that each Party stands for when someone steals political yard signs. The basis of our Democracy is on the discussion of important political issues by the people and our Constitution guarantees each citizen the Right of Freedom of Speech. Political yard signs are just an extension of that Right of Free Speech.
