Outdoors WCU’s Catamount Adventure Camps offer outdoor fun, education for kids

The Catamount Adventure Camps, sponsored by Western Carolina University’s Office of Continuing Education and Base Camp Cullowhee, will be held this summer, offering five-day programs of outdoor fun to children at the elementary and middle school levels.

Three camps will present age-appropriate activities to children of varying grade levels. The camp for rising third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders is July 11-15. Rising sixth- and seventh- graders have camp July 25-29, and rising eighth- and ninth-graders Aug. 1-5. Each program lasts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Participants will have the opportunity to experience outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking and rock climbing, all under the close supervision of qualified guides from Base Camp Cullowhee, WCU’s outdoor program service.

Each activity will involve small groups of 8 to 10 people facing challenges and overcoming obstacles together in safe and encouraging settings. Teaching young people new outdoor skills, as well as the value of teamwork and an appreciation of nature, are among the goals of the program.

The cost for all adventure camps is $225 per person. To register, or for more information, call Bobby Hensley at 828- 227-7397 or go to learn.wcu.edu and click on “Camps and Programs for Kids.”
