Outdoors Take the WalkBikeNC Challenge and travel by foot, bike or bus

The N.C. Department of Transportation is challenging North Carolinians to step outside their comfort zone and try walking, biking or riding the bus to a destination that they may normally drive to on a regular basis.

The “WalkBikeNC Challenge” runs through the months of September and October. The challenge encourages people to walk, ride a bike or a take a bus to a destination, then write about their experience on the online forum

“Trips you make frequently to places like the grocery store, a restaurant or a friend’s house are great opportunities to try walking, biking or riding a bus,” said Bicycle and Pedestrian Division Director Lauren Blackburn. “At the same time, by taking this challenge, you can also provide NCDOT with valuable feedback about using these kinds of transportation.”

A new destination is being introduced each week via the forum. Once a destination is unveiled, participants may travel to that location at any point during the eight weeks of the challenge and report on their experiences.

Submissions will be incorporated into the final Statewide Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan. Photos and video are also welcome.

Challenge participants are already sharing their feedback. The trip “let me put my daily workout in combination with running an errand,” said one Challenge participant. Said another: “I have lost weight, saved money…and am able to give back to the environment by saving on gas emissions.”
