Old Edwards Inn and Spa will host a Fall Fashion Show Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 8. Guest speaker, Richard René Silvin will speak from his memoir, “Noblesse Oblige,” which features his friendship with the Duchess of Windsor.

Considered one of the world’s foremost authorities on the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Silvin was the Duchess’ escort in Paris from the time she was widowed in May 1972 and until the onset of her long, final illness in 1975.

Silvin has selected two-dozen representative pictures of the Duchess wearing a variety of outfits and jewelry from casual to formal including some propriety pictures that have never been seen by the public. The pictures of the fashion icon start in 1920 and cover every decade until the 1970s.

Highlands Nature Center hosts event

Some animals we love, some we hate, and others we eat. The emerging field of Anthrozoology is the study of the relationships between humans and animals. In addition, humananimal relations, and the psychology behind how we feel about them, are the focus of Dr. Hal Herzog’s book, “Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat: Why It’s So Hard to Think Straight About Animals.”

The Highlands Biological Foundation will host Dr. Herzog on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 6 p.m. in The Highlands Nature Center as the closing event of its “Think About Thursdays” summer series. Dr. Herzog, Professor of Psychology at Western Carolina University, has investigated the complex psychology of human interactions with other species for more than 20 years. With an expert in the field who has a great sense of humor, this Zahner Conservation Lecture promises to be beyond worthwhile.

Annual Scott Hogsed Memorial Youth Conservation and Education Day set for Saturday, Aug. 27 in Brasstown

It is that time of year again to get youth registered for the annual Scott Hogsed Memorial Youth Conservation & Education Day.

The event, which is held in Brasstown on Fred Cook’s farm, is Saturday, Aug. 27. Gates open at 7 a.m. and admission is totally free. Youth ages 7-17 are invited to attend from all across the region and the nation. Youth will be learning about outdoor activities including hunting and fishing, archery and firearm safety, and much, much more. This event also offers a free wild game lunch for all participants and parents.Youth will receive a free t-shirt and goody bag as well as being entered to win door prizes.

Members of the Franklin Tourism Development Authority met last Monday at Shoney’s for their monthly meeting, hearing the proposal of upcoming event organizers and a member of the community interested in joining TDA ranks, contending eligibility as a member.

Rob Gasbarro and Cory McCall, proprietors of the downtown Franklin outfitters store Outdoor 76, presented to the board their plans of holding the first annual Outdoor Athlon event.

Last month, members of Franklin’s Tourism Development Authority denied a grant request amounting to $4,000 to help pay for event expenditures.
