The Franklin High School varsity basketball teams hosted North Henderson on Friday, Feb. 1. The Lady Panthers started off the evening by trouncing the Knights, 47-29. The game looked as though it would be a close affair at half-time when Franklin led by eight points, but the second half told a different story as the Panther's outpaced North Henderson by 18 at the final buzzer. The Lady Panthers took that momentum in to their next game against the East Henderson and easily dispatched the Eagles, 74-32. This moves the Ladies to a 16-2 record overall and a 10-1 record in the conference and ties the team for first place with Pisgah, who they played last night to find out who sits atop the rankings.
In the boys' match-up, coming off a crushing defeat against Smoky Mountain on Jan. 29, the Panthers bounced back with a 63-48 win over the Knights last Friday in the one-sided conference game. The boys also joined the Ladies in the win column Tuesday, beating East Henderson, 77-61. The win moves the Panthers to a 6-5 conference record and a 15-6 record overall. The boys also hosted Pisgah last night in a game that was originally scheduled for Jan. 30, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather. The Franklin varsity teams will play again Friday, Feb. 8, at the Panther Den in another conference game against the 6-13 West Henderson Falcons. The team will also hold Senior Night to honor senior athletes who play winter sports. OTHER SPORTS NEWS: The Franklin High School wrestling team came up short Tuesday, Feb. 5, against the Pisgah Bears. Coming off a loss to North Henderson last Friday, Feb. 1, the Panthers hoped to rebound with a big win at Pisgah High School. Jackson Roper and Dustin Smith were able to secure wins, but at the end of the evening, the score stood at 9-67, giving Franklin another defeat and leaving the team with a record of 7-9. The last match of the season will be held at Rabun Gap Friday, Feb. 8.
The Franklin High School swim team travelled to Huntersville, on Friday, Feb. 1, to compete in the Regional Swimming and Diving Meet with the following results; Girls’ 200 Medley: 17th; Boys’ 200 Medley: 16th; Killian Carpenter: 200 IM 18th; Brittany Burton: 50 free, 24th; Shannon Esterwood: 50 free, 22nd; Cassidy Zemmin: 50 free, 21st; Caledin Wylupek: 100 fly, 18th; Girls’ 200 free: 12th; Boys’200 free: 14th; Killian Carpenter: 100 Back, 21st; Matthew Bishop: 100 Breast, 22nd; Girls’400 Free: 13th; Boys' 400 free: 14th.
Divers: Taylor Combs – 3rd (medaled), Danielle Brown – 4th, Haylee Garrett – 7th, Aliyah Stahl – 11th Blake Randall – 4th, Ethan Volk – 5th, Hayden Volk – 6th, Blake Raymond – 7th. All of the divers qualified to compete at the State Championships that take place in Raleigh, and the girls’ 200 free relay – Sydney Hensley, Cassidy Zemmin, Brittany Burton, and Shannon Esterwood will compete at the State Championship in Cary, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8.
