Three Franklin players named to all-tournament team.
The Franklin High School varsity basketball teams each posted wins at the Panther Den Monday night, Feb. 25, in the first round of the N.C. state playoffs.
After a tough loss to Pisgah in the WNC Athletic Conference tournament championship game the Lady Panthers were able to start the night off strong against the 19-6 South Point Red Raiders. What would end up being a back and forth battle between the two teams would end with Franklin pulling ahead and away in the last minutes of the game to seal the victory, 73-65.
The team travelled to Shelby, Wednesday, Feb. 27, to take on the Crest Chargers for the second round of tournament play. Two Lady Panthers were named to the All-Tournament team, Maggie Stewart and Sarah Henson.
The boys' team followed the winning trend of the night by dispatching the R.S. Central Hill Toppers in another thrilling contest. The bout remained close throughout the first two quarters with the Panthers closing the half holding a one-point lead. They were able to double their first half production for 48 points in the second half alone, eventually securing the win, 69-55.
The boys travelled to Gastonia Wednesday, Feb. 27, for a second round showdown with the Hunter Huss Huskies. Drew Simpson was named to the All-Tournament team for the boys.
Other sports news: The Franklin High School varsity softball team was set to play the Murphy Bulldogs on Wednesday, but the game was rescheduled for Tuesday, March 5, at 4:30 at the Macon Middle School.
