Franklin High School student and athlete Maggie Stewart will not be calling her basketball career quits just yet.
Friday at the FHS gym, Stewart signed with the Catawba Valley Community College Bucks to continue her education while playing for the junior college who had a 30-1 record last season and won the Carolinas-Virginia Conference championship.
Stewart, who was the center for the Lady Panthers, was instrumental in a magical run during the state playoffs that saw the team reach the fourth round.
In a crushing loss to Tuscola, Stewart was forced to leave the game in the first quarter as a result of a torn ACL and is currently awaiting surgery.
Her name will forever be in the books at Franklin High School for being a member of FHS’ 1,000 Point Club, a feat even more impressive since she also ranks as the third highest scorer in team history. Her most recent accomplishment after a tenure on the varsity team was being chosen to play in the Blue-White All-Star game.
The game is a celebrated tradition that involves the coaches of the teams in WNC choosing senior standouts from the region to compete in a final showcase.
Catawba coach Tisha England was in attendance to welcome the new signee and to assure the student body that she would take care of their former star.
Stewart's family was also on hand to show their support along with many of her classmates and former teammates.
