FHS girl's varsity team wins conference title
Last Thursday night, the Franklin High School Lady Panthers traveled to Sylva to take on the Smoky Mountain Mustangs to determine the 2A WNCAC champions. The teams had met twice prior to the game with Franklin winning both contests by wide margins. Thursday's game would be no different. The Panthers shot to an early lead and continued to batter the Mustangs through each quarter, eventually securing the win 67-36, thus becoming the conference champions.
Monday night's game began the 2A NCHSAA Women's Basketball State Championship tournament. Franklin enters the tournament as an eighth seed and took on 25th ranked Forbush High School Falcons at the Panther Den.
In the opening minutes of the game it looked as though the Falcons might have been able to hang with the Lady Panthers as they used fast breaks to put up some points and stay within reach of Franklin. The trend didn't last however as Franklin found their rhythm and outscored Forbush, 22-9, in the first quarter and 23-6 in the second. In the third quarter, the Lady Panthers relaxed their full court press a little, but still maintained their dominance. By the end of the game, Franklin had once again proved their dominance by winning, 72-32.
The Lady Panthers played in the second round of the tournament last night, again at home. They took on the 19-6 North Surry High School Greyhounds.
